RIP THE RUNWAY

RIP THE RUNWAY 2007
Hosts- Ciara & Chris Brown
music, fashion, and the runway all intertwined in 1......
The night was filled with plenty of clothing lines and musical artists. Many celebs came out to entertain and even show their strut on the cat walk in design labels such as AppleBottoms, LRG, G-Unit, Ande Sew and much more. The models set the scene to tunes such as "Throw Sum D's" by Rich Boy, "Grillz" by Nelly, "Buddy" by Musiq Soulchild, "I Want You" by Lloyd, "Poppin'" by Chris Brown and Rakim threw in a lil ol' skool mix for the ol' heads. Overall, the show was rather interesting, pretty much better than last year’s edition. It was rather short to a lot of the viewers on the other hand though. Most of the television audience was on the edge of their seats, such as I, waiting for MORE..... but in the end, the hour had pretty much done enough justice. It provided a better grasp as to what the season brings and lays down on the table.

Jordan Brand MUSIC BY RICH BOY & POOLO THA DON
The first line to set the stage was Michael Jordan's apparel line JORDAN BRAND. Consisting of mainly active wear for both Men & Women. Sneakers rocked as usual, we're all a "J's" fan (LOL). Huge locker, purses were used as an accessory accent for the women. Colors for the active wear were all brights, as giving meaning for the Spring. Topping it all off, celebs such as Big Tigga, Sammie, and Rocsi showcased pieces from this line.

AppleBottoms MUSIC BY PAUL WALL, J.D., NELLY ALI & BIG GIPP
Second up was Nelly's women's apparel line AppleBottoms. Nelly's line involved lots of metallic and bright colors. Including bikini tops as actual bras. Incorporations of Argle patterns and hoodies were trend in this line and are sure to be a trend for the season. OVERALLS are back!!!! and has a sort of trendiness also. Velour suits and jump suits are also included. Huge purses in this section are a big accessory also. Nelly also expands all the way to establishing a little girls line in which consists of mainly sweats and T's with the AppleBottom logo on them. Here, celebs such as Brooke Hogan, Alyessa Renee', Beautiful (Flava of Love), Angela and Vanessa Simmons (Rev Run's children) all modeled this clothing line on the runway.

Mychael Knight MUSIC BY LLOYD
This up and coming fashion designer was formally on "Project Runway" this past season. Now he is flaunting his own style of clothing and showcases it on Rip the Runway. His motto is "celebrating a woman's body", in which he solely makes only women's clothing. His line includes more blouses and dresses for women. Colors include plenty of whites, yellows, limes and browns. He also adds metallic in his collection as an accent topping off the colors he chose for this collection. Celebs such as Rocsi, Tocorra, and JuLissa ripped the runway here.

Monif C., LRG, and Steve Harvey MUSIC BY MUSIQ SOULCHILD
In this section, there are three lines showcased at once. Incorporating lines for both big Men and plus sized Women. LRG's line typically showcased bright colors in track jackets and jeans with detailing on them. LRG standing for Lifted Research Group. Monif C.'s line showcased apparel for only plus sized women, models flaunted long fitted dresses. Steve Harvey's line showcased big men in suits that were very professional looking. All lines incorporated plenty of browns and tans on top of the spring colors. Tocorra flaunted her moves on the runway in this section.
Ande Sew MUSIC BY CHRIS BROWN
This line didn’t walk the runway, rather the models just simply showed the beautiful pieces of Ande Sew. This collection was really raw and rigged and specially made for Women. Tans and browns were the main basis for this line

Lila Nikole Riverra-SWIMWEAR MUSIC BY MIMS
This line overall explains it all!!!! Swimwear plus sun equals HOT HOT HOTTTTT!!!!! Swimwear included brights once again with hints of florals here and there. Patterns and metallics showed up more within this section. This season is the season for 1 pieces. Now that they are actually back in style no one has to complain about the bikini (LOL). Colors such as tans, greens and browns show up for basis. Celebs such as Rocsi and Ya-Ya (America's Next top Model) walk the cat walk in there 1 and 2 pieces.

G-Unit MUSIC BY RAKIM
The last line to grace the runway was 50 cents line G-Unit. His line incorporated the overall, as you can see this will be a hot trend coming into the spring and summer, and jumpsuits. Dark colors in this line, more reds and indigo blues, blacks and greens. He also just as well as Nelly has a children's line, but has both boys and little girls clothing.Celebs such as Vanessa, Delicious (Flava of Love), Lil Scrappy, Ya-Ya, and 50's son modeled here and ended the show with a bang.
As we can see, patterns and textures do become a basis for what the spring clothing season may fall more likely to. Make sure if your one of those that is trying to get your clothing game together that (women) purchase those overalls and jumpsuits, and (men) those Steve Harvey brand suits lol.

Back In The Day: Fashions From The Past

…..Go back in the day
British Knights and gold chains
Do the prep and cabbage patch
And wear your laces all fat
Back in the dayyyyyyyy, hey hey
Hip-Hop has chaaaanged…..
-Missy Elliot ‘Back in the Day’

Hip Hop fashion has always been popular, mainly because it gave people the chance to make a statement. The Urban and Hip Hop fashion world change as different genres and artists of the decade influence it.

Let’s take it back as far as the late 70’s and early 80’s when artists like LL Cool J, Will Smith, Big Daddy Kane, Curtis Blow and Run DMC influenced the fashion scene. Let’s take it far back when the dopiest outfit was a bright neon-colored track jumpsuit, Adidas with the phat lace, and big gold earrings or a dookie rope (heavy gold chain). And thanks to Will “The Fresh Prince” Smith, people said bye to Jheri curls and hello to the hi-top fade! Also in the ‘80’s the Black Pride movement had a big impact on the hip hop culture. It was reflected through the dreadlocks, the green, black and red colors of the clothes and the African chain.

The fashion world took a turn in the late 80’s after Kris Kross started wearing his clothes backwards. That style stayed for a little while but another group took the scene by storm: N.W.A (Niggaz with Attitude). N.W.A brought the Dickies with plaid shirts and chucks. But you can’t talk about the late 90’s fashions without mentioning Michael Jordan and Nikes. Nikes took over the sneaker game in the streets by storm. Other popular brands were Timberland and Champion.

In the 90’s, Hip Hop music changed and the cstyle of Hip Hop changed along with it. The biggest fad of the late 90’s was the baggy pants and bandanas, better known as the gangsta style. Street gangs and the prison “fashion” of wearing pants with no belt influenced the gangsta style. Artists such as Snoop, Dr. Dre, Notorious B.I.G and Ice Cube made the styles popular. Even female artists, like Aaliyah and TLC, rocked the baggy pants but still kept it sexy. New York contributed to the Hip Hop fashion game with the Hoodies and Timberlands. And the South passed on the gold teeth fashion.

The alligator skin shoes and hats, better known as the Mafioso fashion came up in the mid-90’s and was worn by artists like Jay-Z and Notorious B.I.G. By the end of the 90’s, Sean “P Diddy” Combs came with his fashion of flashy suits and platinum jewelry to replace the gold ones of the ‘80s. Women fashion in the 90’s became more different too: artists like Lil Kim and Foxy Brown were known for their flashy and fitting couture clothes, while artists like Lauryn Hill kept her style more low key. Name brands were a hot commodity in the 90’s, especially Tommy Hilfiger. Most of us had at least one Tommy shirt and we probably thought we were bad in ‘em too! Other popular brands during this time were Nautica, Karl Kani, Calvin Klein, DKNY, Polo, Fubu, Boss Jeans, Mecca, Guess, Enyce and Ecko.

In the late 90’s, people started growing out the fade and replaced them with braids. As for jewelry, there were no more heavy gold or platinum chains; they were replaced by upgraded platinum chains (bling bling) with the diamonds embedded in it. And the gold teeth were replaced with platinum grills, sometimes with diamonds in those too! The Hip Hop fashion adopted Air Force 1’s after Nelly’s new hot single.

Fashion has changed and is still changing today. But if you pay attention to the direction of the change, you’ll see that styles are recycled and repeated, so who knows…save those shoes and belts because they might come back in style!
